The Expanse - Syfy orders Drama based on Leviathan Wakes

NEW YORK – APRIL 11, 2014 – Syfy continues to ramp up its slate of ambitious and high quality scripted series with a straight-to-series greenlight for space-opera project The Expanse, it was announced today by Syfy President, Dave Howe. The 10-episode order is Syfy's boldest new series commitment to date. The Expanse is produced by Alcon Television Group (ATG), a division of Alcon Entertainment, and marks the company's first series order.
Academy Award-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Alfonso Cuaron's Children of Men, Iron Man) wrote the pilot; they will continue to serve as writers, as well as executive producers.
A thriller set two hundred years in the future, The Expanse follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective and a Rogue ship's captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.
Said Howe, "'The Expanse' is epic in scale and scope and promises to be Syfy's most ambitious series to date. Bringing this coveted book franchise to television with our partners at Alcon and the Sean Daniel Company is a giant win for Syfy, reinforcing our overall strategy to produce bold, provocative and compelling sci-fi fantasy stories. 'The Expanse' joins a killer line-up of high-concept, high quality series, along with recently announced original projects 'Ascension,' '12 Monkeys,' the renewal of 'Helix,' and the soon to premiere 'Dominion.'"
ATG President Sharon Hall states, "'The Expanse' is an addictive, sophisticated, character-driven franchise and Mark and Hawk are the perfect people to steer it. Their script is a totally immersive and accessible sci-fi journey. We are thrilled to be in business with Syfy on this venture."
Brown and Daniel state: "'The Expanse' is one of the most special pieces of material we've ever encountered and it has been our dream to bring it to life since the moment we read it. We couldn't be more excited to be doing it with this team of all-stars - Mark, Hawk, and our partners at Alcon and Syfy." Alcon co-founders and co-CEO's Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will serve as executive producers with Sharon Hall. Alcon Television executive Ben Roberts will serve as co-producer. Ben Cook will serve as producer.
Sean Daniel (Graceland, The Mummy) and Jason Brown of the Sean Daniel Company developed the original pitch, with Fergus and Ostby, and will also executive produce.
Developed with the Sean Daniel Company as a direct-to-series project, Alcon is financing and executive producing the hour-long, ten episode series, based on the popular New York Times bestselling book series collectively known as The Expanse, written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey). Abraham and Franck will be show producers.
The multi-installment, best-selling book series is published in 17 countries, including China, France, Japan, Australia, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom. One in the series, "Leviathan Wakes," was nominated for a Hugo Award as well as a Locus Award, while "Caliban's War" was nominated for a Locus Award.
As the sole studio, Alcon retains the much-in-demand worldwide distribution rights. Alcon is currently out to cast and directors.

I had not heard of this.
I watched the pilot, and it was ok.
my review
I liked the end where they were attacked by unknown ship.
It didnt make sense though, why bait them there just to destroy them ??
could they not have done that anyway without the bait ??? lol I think they could.

Also why destroy that mining ship ? what purpose?

I dont really care for futuristic shows that are gloomy, and this one seems to do that.
The other strike for this show is the cast is lack luster, no charisma.
They got rid of mike early on, dont know if that is it with him.

I sort of liked the girl who got killed on the mining ship, so now shes gone.

but it is out in dec , so I will watch ep 2 and 3 and give it a shot, but not really expecting
to like it.
I dont like one (surviving lol) cast member, dont dislike any either, but not liking any says they
did not cast well.
They also did not develop any of them in the pilot.
But nothing on in dec early jan so it is on at a good time.

The alcon company is financing this to have worldwide dist. and if it is a hit they will do good,
but if it is a bust they lose big.
Based on books, some do well some dont, thing is all the book buyers are not nielsen
members, so it wont help with ratings much.
syfy ch has become known for bad syfy, so that hurts too.

But I will give it a chance.

Well, they just seem to love the show and have faith in it. And to be honest, regarding the pilot and all the positive buzz about The Expanse, I think the high expectations are justified. I for one like it a lot too and believe it will be a hit!

Yep, I really like it!
Here you go for the episode recaps (eps have aired up to 1x05 by now), just click on the ep titles:

1x01 "Dulcinea"
1x02 "The Big Empty"
1x03 "Remember the Cant"
1x04 "CQB"
1x05 "Back to the Butcher"

ok I saw ep 4, and I read the recap on 5.
I think they have 1 good story, the one about the people that escaped in the ship.
Having 3 stories going at once, sort of ruins it for me.

I prefer 1 story that moves forward each ep.

I lost interest in the one looking for the girl, and dont care for space station story.
Or the earth story, I just get bored during those, and in ep 5 hardly any movement
in the 1 I liked.

but hey if you like it, that is ok! not much else for space shows now.

I have to wait for the next star trek continues ep, lol they have like 9 month to a year
hiatus between eps!

And I can watch Caprica again, been awhile on that now.

Well, I remember ep 1x04 as pretty awesome. The whole space battle around the Marsian flagship was exciting and the "look and feel" of the ship interior was impressing.
